In research cited by behavioral scientist Jennifer Aaker, Gallup surveyed 1.4 million people across 166 countries and asked a simple question: Did you smile or laugh yesterday? At ages 16–20, most people said yes.
But around age 23—right as we enter the workforce—those “yes” responses plummet and don’t recover until age 80.The problem? Our average life expectancy is 76.
This striking pattern highlights deeper behavioral insights into what drives lifelong fulfillment.
What People Regret Most
Behavioral research reveals three common regrets people identify at the end of their lives:
Pursuing others’ expectations instead of their ownThey spent too much time meeting obligations and not enough time pursuing what truly mattered to them.
Missing joy in everyday momentsOrdinary experiences that could have brought happiness were overshadowed by constant worry about the future.
Not expressing enough care or gratitudeThey wish they had shown more appreciation, affection, or encouragement to the people around them.
Why These Lessons Matter for Leadership and Work
These principles extend far beyond personal reflection—they directly influence effective leadership, collaboration, and career growth.
Authenticity builds stronger relationships
Being genuine fosters trust and connection, strengthening teams and improving communication.
Presence improves decision-making
Focusing on the moment increases clarity, reduces stress, and leads to better choices in work and life.
Appreciation fuels meaningful teamwork
Acknowledging contributions and showing gratitude boosts engagement and creates environments where people thrive.
Bringing These Ideas Into Your Work and Life
In a fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook small but impactful actions that shape our overall well-being. By being intentional about how we work, connect, and show up for others, we can build careers—and lives—filled with purpose and meaning.
Take a moment today to reflect: How could you bring more authenticity, focus, or care to your work or relationships?
